An Update From Coomera Valley Rural Fire Brigade

The next issue that will become critical for the safety of many communities will be access to the fire trails that we use to access bush fires and work from for containment lines before bushfires get to close to homes.

This is a fire trail in the Upper Coomera area that is currently blocked and unable to be accessed. The risk of bushfires is very low at the moment but the GCCC and Rural Brigades are well aware these trails will need to be checked and a considerable amount of work will need to be done.

Residents living with bushland at the rear of their property are requested not to place debris from the storms over the fence and into bushland. This will increase the fuel loading at the rear of your property and increase your risk.

If storm debris can't be removed from your property, place them into piles and get them ready to burn. If the pile is not bigger then 2 metres in any direction, you don't need a permit to burn the pile. Ensure you have the appropriate equipment to control the burn and they should never be left unattended. If the pile is larger then 2 x 2 x 2 and you live in the Coomera Valley area, call the Coomera Valley Fire Warden on 0438079909 and talk to Matt for a Permit to Light application. Matt will be very helpful and provide advice around what to do and assist you to obtain a permit to burn. He lives in the area and is passionate to help residents reduce their risk.

If the pile is very large or you have a large paddock/land parcel that requires burning off and you have a permit from the Fire Warden, contact our Brigade on 0417338457 to request assistance with doing the Hazard Reduction Burn. This is a free service but donations are always accepted to assist with catering/equipment & training.

The requests have already started for us to assist residents with these burns but other Brigades from across the Gold Coast have offered to assist with the significant back log we now have. When the weather is right, our crews will be back on the ground helping to reduce the fire risk in our communities.

Please share this important information with Residents Social pages so we can get the message across to as many residents as possible.
