Flight Sergeant Lane’s Short Sunderland flying boat was lost on a anti-submarine patrol in the Bay of Biscay. It is believed to have been attacked and shot down by six German Junker 88 aircraft. All 11 crew members of the Sunderland were lost in the attack.
